Netflix Expresses Concern Over Demand for Gen AI Tools and Its Competitive Edge
Netflix has sounded a threat to generative artificial intelligence, as such technologies could adversely affect its operations and ability to compete effectively with other companies.
In its annual report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the streaming giant said new technological developments, including the development and use of generative artificial intelligence, are developing rapidly.
“If our competitors gain an advantage by using such technologies, our ability to compete effectively and our results of operations could be adversely affected,” the company said.
Netflix further said that the use or adoption of new and emerging technologies “may increase our exposure to intellectual property claims, and the availability of copyright and other intellectual property protections for AI-generated material is uncertain.”
AI-powered entertainment is still in its infancy, but things can change quickly.
A recent Wall Street Journal article noted that widely available AI tools can suggest story, character arcs, and dialogue. ChatGPT can even write a basic script when given a few prompts.
Generative AI was used to make the 2022 movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.
According to reports, there are already generative AI systems that can create videos. AI is also used to make data-driven predictions about how unusual stories will affect viewers.
In May of last year, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike over revenue from streaming services for film and TV writers, demanding that production companies “regulate the use of material produced with artificial intelligence or similar technologies.”
